Greenwood police say storage unit burglary suspects caught with bolt cutters
GREENWOOD, Ind. - Court documents reveal that two people were caught red-handed with bolt cutters in a Greenwood storage unit complex as officers uncovered at least 10 units that had been broken into.
Thomas Flores, 43, and Linda Shipman, 38, both of Indianapolis, are charged with three counts of burglary as a Level 5 felony along with a misdemeanor count of theft. Flores also faces one count of identity deception, a Level 6 felony.
According to court documents, officers of the Greenwood Police Department were called to Storage Rentals of America on N. Emerson Avenue early July 9 on report of a possible burglary.
The caller reported two suspicious individuals in the storage complex walking up to various different storage units.
Police ended up locating the suspects sitting inside a parked Mercury Grand Marquis. The woman, later identified as Shipman, fled after spotting the police cruiser.
Court documents state that Flores originally lied about his identity when questioned by police officers. Bolt cutters were spotted lying in plain view in the backseat of his vehicle.
A search of the storage unit facility uncovered 10 storage units with their locks cut off. Police eventually made contact with the storage unit renters who reported several items missing from their units.
Greenwood officers found Shipman hiding in a bush near the Maverick Apartment complex after she climbed a fence to escape the storage unit facility, losing a shoe in the process. Shipman tried to claim she was sleeping and knew nothing about the storage unit thefts, court documents reveal.
More than 50 items were discovered during a search of the Grand Marquis, ranging from a PlayStation 3 to power tools, Pokémon cards and a tote filled with medications.
In Indiana, a Level 5 felony carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
