Summer officially starts Friday night
With the upcoming first heat wave of the year, it's good timing just after the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The Summer Solstice, Latin for "sun" occurs at 10:42 p.m. Friday. That's the precise time when the most direct rays of the sun reach the Tropic of Cancer. Friday is also our longest day of the year with just under 15 hours of daylight.
Hottest air since late September arrives
For the first time this year, our pattern is changing as we enter the weekend. A developing HOT DOME of heat will expand well into next week. Under the weight of this, air sinks and compresses. This, in turn, sends temperatures well above normal and into the 90s for much of next week.
Heat headlines have been posted. 28 states are under some sort of headline with this wave of heat. For us, a Heat Advisory kicks in Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and goes through Tuesday night. Our northern fringe counties are under an Excessive Heat Watch for the same timeframe.
HEAT INDEX may reach or exceed 100° here for the first time since last July (7/15/2024 105° in Indianapolis). This will be the story for several days in the afternoon with the sun out in full force and no rain in sight.
Using the new NOAA HeatRisk Tool, it places an Extreme level of heat risk overhead Monday-Tuesday and into next week. That's because overall, there will be very little relief from this heat. The hot dome will be stubborn and won't move. The recent rains will also contribute to the higher dew points. Plus, the high sun angle gives more sunlight and more heat.
Heat is the #1 weather killer in the United States every year. So be sure to take this seriously! Use A/C, limit time outside, have water handy, check the elderly and overall take it easy.
