Thursday marks the hottest day of this heat wave! It's the sixth consecutive day with a high of 90°+ in Indianapolis. Additionally, it's the sixth consecutive day with a heat index in the Circle City at/above 100°. That's something we haven't seen for that length since 2012. Indianapolis had a peak heat index of 101° on Thursday.
Thanks to central Indiana being on the northern fringe of the hot dome, we're in the Ring of Fire when it comes to storms. What that means is thunderstorms travel on the outer edge of that hot dome situated south. It's a pattern that's hard to break. Not everyone sees rain as that activity is scattered.
Expect more of the same for Friday with a Heat Advisory in effect through 8:00 PM. Heat indices around 100° in most spots with afternoon to early evening thunderstorm chances. If your hometown receives rain, consider it a luck of the draw! That's because the powerful sun continues taking moisture from our ground and evaporating it right back into the atmosphere. Any rain is welcome.
Temperatures will be slightly cooler on Saturday but not by much. Still expect the somewhat hotter and muggy conditions to stick around. Afternoon thunderstorm chances are also possible Saturday and into early next week. But eventually, the ridge of hot air looks to break down!
This looks to be temporary but any relief is well-deserved. Tuesday-Thursday next week looks to be much more comfortable with much lower humidity levels. A much drier air mass and northwest flow moves back into central Indiana. For now, stay safe but keep an eye out for we'll FEEL the difference by mid next week.
