Summer officially started at 10:42 p.m. Friday and Mother Nature is giving us summer in a big way. We have an expanding hot dome overhead and that's going to set up camp for days. This will give central Indiana its first heat wave of 2025.
The classic "Ring of Fire" is active with storms riding the jet stream around the expanding HOT DOME. We're stuck in the heat underneath it. Twenty-eight of fifty states have heat alerts. For us, a Heat ADVISORY kicks in at 1 PM and lasts through Tuesday.
Dew points today will quickly rise into the 70s. This will come as the hot dome expands in from the south and west. The only relief as this occurs will be the breezy southwest winds. Otherwise, the higher dew points will give us heat indices in the upper 90s to near 100°. The last time Indianapolis had a 100° heat index reading was back on August 6, 2024.
This is the beginning of an extended period of hot and muggy conditions in central Indiana. With the sun at its highest angle of the year, it's providing nearly 100% solar strength to the surface. Unfortunately, there will be very little cloud cover to provide any sort of relief. Additionally, the recent rains in our grounds will also evaporate quicker due to that powerful sky, adding to the already humid air mass in place.
Saturday will likely be the first 90° high temperature of the year, just behind the average first 90° occurrence on June 14th. Otherwise, expect more of those 90s, heat indices around 100° and lots of sun each day. Into next week, that's when daytime heating rain chances return. We'll cross our fingers that they bring needed relief to central Indiana. Stay safe in the heat, friends!
