Howard Co. Sheriff's Office: Kokomo traffic stop leads to 3 drug arrests


HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. -- A traffic stop conducted by the Howard County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday led to the arrest of three individuals, as well as the seizure of illegal drugs and firearms.




According to a news release from the Howard County Sheriff's Office, a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a Chrysler 300 near Buckeye Street and Woodland Avenue in Kokomo at around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday.








The driver, identified as 45-year-old Michael Steelman, and the passenger, identified as 49-year-old Joshua Smith, were found to have outstanding arrest warrants. The release said a glass smoking device was also found on Smith and a baggie containing suspected methamphetamine was found in the vehicle.








Steelman and Smith were both taken to the Howard County Criminal Justice Center. The release said that at the jail, law enforcement a concealed plastic bag on Smith that reportedly contained 29 grams of methamphetamine.




After an investigation, deputies obtained a search warrant for a home in the 1700 block of S. Armstrong Street in Kokomo. Early Wednesday morning, a search of the home was conducted, which led to the arrest of 48-year-old Michelle Steelman.




The release said that the following items were reportedly found inside the home:





  • 173 grams of methamphetamine




  • 10.8 grams of fentanyl




  • 58.1 grams of marijuana




  • 46 dosage units of LSD




  • Multiple loaded firearms, including handguns and a rifle




  • Numerous glass smoking devices and assorted ammunition.









The documents said that the individuals were preliminarily charged with:








Michael Steelman





  • One count of dealing methamphetamine, a Level 2 felony




  • One count of dealing a schedule I, II or III controlled substance, a Level 3 felony




  • One count of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony




  • One count of felon in possession of a firearm, a Level 5 felony




  • Two drug-related misdemeanors





Michelle Steelman





  • One count of dealing methamphetamine, a Level 2 felony




  • One count of dealing a schedule I, II or III controlled substance, a Level 3 felony




  • One count of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony




  • Two drug-related misdemeanors





Joshua Smith





  • Two outstanding warrants




  • One count of possession of methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony




  • One drug-related misdemeanor
