ICE agents detain Purdue University student in New York

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A Purdue University student has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New York as federal officials claim her visa expired two years ago.

According to Nexstar station partner PIX11, 20-year-old Yeonsoo Go was detained by ICE agents on July 31 after her visa hearing in Manhattan. The Department of Homeland Security said Go had allegedly overstayed her visa by two years, claiming she was unlawfully present in the United States.

PIX11 reports that Go first came to the United States four years ago on a religious visa with her mother, who is an Episcopal priest. Protestors soon gathered outside 26 Federal Plaza shortly after Go was detained.

Go was scheduled to appear before an immigration court judge in October before she was detained. She has since been placed in federal detention before she was transferred to a facility based in Louisiana.

Indiana State Rep. Chris Campbell (D-West Lafayette) said in a statement shared with FOX59/CBS4 Monday that an attorney for the Episcopal Diocese in New York stated that Go's visa does not expire until December and that she had attended her immigration hearing to "update her paperwork."

"Arresting people outside of the courthouse proves that this isn't about legal immigration. It's even more concerning that her parents found out about her transfer to Louisiana from online records," State Rep. Campbell said. "It's cruel. I urge for the release of Yeonsoo Go, and a proper review of her immigration status. Treat people with dignity regardless of their status."

Go is enrolled in the Purdue College of Pharmacy. According to her LinkedIn profile, Go began studying Pharmaceutical Sciences at Purdue University in 2024.

Purdue University shared the following statement on Monday night.

"There have been media reports of a visa situation involving one of our students. The dean of students' office has reached out to the student's family."
