'Ice Cold Whole:' Indy 500 drivers pick milk preferences ahead of Sunday's race

INDIANAPOLIS -- For the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500, the majority of drivers will celebrate with whole milk if they win Sunday's race.

On Tuesday, officials with the American Dairy Association of Indiana announced the milk preferences for this year's field. Out of the field of 33, 29 drivers chose whole milk, while four selected 2%, for this year's celebration.

"This Sunday, two Indiana dairy farmers will deliver ice cold whole or 2% milk to the winning team," officials with the association said in a social media post announcing the preferences.

The following drivers, presented in the race's running order, chose whole milk as their preference:

  • Robert Shwartzman

  • Takuma Sato

  • Pato O'Ward

  • Scott Dixon

  • Felix Rosenqvist

  • Alex Palou

  • David Malukas

  • Christian Lundgaard

  • Marcus Ericsson

  • Scott McLaughlin

  • Kyffin Simpson

  • Ed Carpenter

  • Santino Ferrucci

  • Devlin DeFrancesco

  • Sting Ray Robb

  • Christian Rasmussen

  • Kyle Larson

  • Louis Foster

  • Callum Ilott

  • Kyle Kirkwood

  • Nolan Siegel

  • Ryan Hunter-Reay

  • Jack Harvey

  • Colton Herta

  • Marco Andretti

  • Marcus Armstrong

  • Josef Newgarden

  • Will Power

Only four drivers chose 2% as their preference: Conor Daly, Alexander Rossi, Helio Castroneves and Graham Rahal. This comes after five drivers chose 2% as their preference in last year's race.

No drivers this year chose skim milk. According to previous reports, the two drivers who chose skim milk in last year's race, Christian Rasmussen and Christian Lundgaard, made the switch to whole mike for this year's race.

According to previous reports, the milk tradition started at the 1936 Indianapolis 500 when Louis Meyer requested buttermilk after his win. Since then, the winners of each race have drunk, poured and sprayed milk in celebration.
