IDEM: Central Indiana under Air Quality Action Day for Fourth of July holiday
INDIANAPOLIS -- The majority of Central Indiana will be under an Air Quality Action Day for the Fourth of July.
According to officials with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, fine particulate matter levels are expected to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range, or "orange" range in the following areas on Friday:
- Central/East Central Indiana, including:
- Bloomington
- Brookville
- Columbus
- Frankfort
- Indianapolis
- Greensburg
- Kokomo
- Lebanon
- Martinsville
- Muncie
- Richmond
- Western/West Central Indiana, including:
- Crawfordsville
- Covington
- Delphi
- Fowler
- Greencastle
- Lafayette
- Newport
- Monticello
- Spencer
- Sullivan
- Terre Haute.
The release said Air Quality Action Days are in effect from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on the specified date. For Friday, officials are expecting hot temperatures, sunny skies and light winds while high pressure settles over the region.
"This stability is likely to cause a buildup of fine particulates," the release said. "When combined with additional emissions from fireworks, air quality could reach levels in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range-both on an hourly basis and potentially over the full 24-hour period."
