'I'm not going to lose my f****** job over you': IMPD officer placed on leave for allegedly using ag

INDIANAPOLIS - An officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was placed on administrative leave after he allegedly harassed his ex-wife.

According to court documents filed Monday, 38-year-old Nicholas Cauley used police resources - including his IMPD email account and license plate lookup tools - to harass his ex-wife. Cauley now faces three charges - two counts of official misconduct and one count of harassment via computer or electronic communication.

Court records indicate Cauley and his ex-wife agreed to dissolve their marriage in August 2024. They were officially divorced in December.

In the months following the divorce, Cauley allegedly harassed his ex-wife via text and call. According to court documents, when Cauley's ex-wife attempted to block him from texting or calling her, he resorted to sending her emails and other messages through Facebook, Instagram, PayPal, Hinge and Pinterest.

Cauley's ex-wife also told police that he attempted to leverage access to her personal property in an attempt to get her to talk to him. According to court documents, Cauley's ex-wife said he even threw her personal belongings into the woods and prevented her from collecting items that were stored inside their formerly shared residence.

During one text conversation about her personal property, Cauley's ex-wife indicated that she was going to take the matter up with IMPD. Cauley responded to his ex-wife's proposed action by sending texts that said things like:

  • "I'm not going to lose my f****** job over you."

  • "Dude, it's a civil issue, they will tell you to get f*****"

  • "I committed no crimes"

After Cauley's ex-wife managed to block him on her phone and other online accounts, he began to use his IMPD email to send messages to her. He sent her a message that said the following via his IMPD email:

"Hi - is there anything I can do to improve your ex-husband experience? F*** off and leave you alone forever or pretend you don't exist if I see you in public? I have tried my hardest to leave you alone. I am sorry about the little one. Hope all is well."

The email Cauley sent his ex-wife via his work email did not contain language as strong as other messages and voicemails he left her. In some messages, Cauley threatened to track his ex-wife down and claimed she owed him money.

During an internal investigation of Cauley, IMPD determined that he took his marked police vehicle to his ex-wife's place of work in March. Police confirmed that Cauley took his squad car to his ex-wife's office by examining GPS data.

Court records indicate that, upon further examination of Cauley's computer-aided dispatch (CAD) information, police determined he was at his ex-wife's office when he was called to take a vandalism report on North New Jersey Street. CAD data showed that Cauley was not responding to an incident he was dispatched to, nor working a law enforcement incident he observed when he was at his ex-wife's office.

IMPD also discovered that Cauley conducted a registration inquiry on his ex-wife's vehicle in March using law enforcement tools. When Cauley obtained a return on his inquiry, he got access to his ex-wife's most recent address. Cauley's ex-wife told investigators that she believed he did not know her address before running the license plate inquiry.

Police did check to see if Cauley's marked police car was ever taken to his ex-wife's new residence. Investigators ultimately determined that Cauley's IMPD vehicle never went to his ex-wife's new address.

IMPD contacted Cauley and asked him for a recorded statement. His private counsel responded to the request, but neither he nor his representation gave investigators a statement.

Both of the official misconduct charges Cauley faces are Level 6 Felonies. The maximum penalty for a Level 6 Felony in Indiana is a 2.5-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.

In a press release sent last week, IMPD reported that Cauley was arrested on July 18. He was booked at the Marion County Adult Detention Center.

IMPD reported that Cauley is a nine-year veteran with the agency. IMPD collected Cauley's police-issued equipment and suspended his law enforcement authority when they placed him on administrative leave.

"The trust our community places in us is built on accountability and integrity," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey wrote in a prepared statement. "When any officer violates that trust, it's our duty to act quickly and transparently. We are committed to working closely with the prosecutor to ensure this case is investigated appropriately."
