IMPD: 1 killed in shooting on east side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - A man was killed in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Sunday night.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 5900 block of Oak Avenue - which is located off of South Arlington Avenue - around 8:22 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult male victim with an injury consistent with a gunshot wound.

IMPD confirmed that the man was transported from the scene to a local hospital in critical condition before he ultimately died.

Police believe the shooting stemmed from some sort of disturbance between family members. IMPD reported that its officers have detained the person believed to be responsible for the shooting. Police have identified the person of interest as an adult.

Investigators are attempting to speak with individuals who witnessed the shooting. Police are, however, still encouraging those with additional information on the shooting to contact the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.

Police do not believe the shooting poses any ongoing threat to the community because it stemmed from an isolated disturbance between family members.

The shooting on Oak Avenue happened less than two hours after a fatal stabbing occurred on South State Avenue. During a media briefing, IMPD Night Watch Captain Don Weilhammer expressed his frustration with the violent incidents that happened in Indianapolis Sunday night.

"It's almost like a broken record on all these that I go to when I get asked that," Weilhammer said. "The bottom line is, this is a permanent thing that has happened hear tonight because it was solved with violence. Whether it's a knife or gun or any other type of tool or instrument, violence is not the way to solve our conflicts between each other.

"I also earlier was talking to two little kids. One of the little kids wasn't outside, but the other one was. Now, he's traumatized by this in his neighborhood. Now, he's wondering if he's going to be OK. I can't imagine how you'd be able to tell your son that unfortunately somebody was shot and killed just down the street from you. Violence isn't the way."

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
