IMPD: Disturbance triggered hours-long SWAT operation on near north side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - One of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams conducted an hours-long operation on the north side of the city Saturday afternoon.




An IMPD spokesperson confirmed that officers were first called to the 3600 block of North Illinois Street around 3:21 p.m. to investigate "a disturbance between a man and a woman."




After officers arrived at the scene and began their investigation, they learned a woman may have been assaulted and had a gun pointed at her during the disturbance. While they were working at the scene, police saw a person who they believed was a suspect run into a nearby home.

Because guns may have been involved in the initial disturbance, officers who were investigating the incident requested assistance at the scene from a SWAT team.




SWAT units and negotiators responded to the area to help investigators. During their investigation, police conducted a search of the home the alleged suspect ran into.




IMPD indicated that it did not find any suspects in the home during the search. An agency spokesperson reported that the detective assigned to the case will now be tasked with locating the alleged suspect because SWAT units didn't find anybody during their search of the home.




IMPD began clearing the scene around 6 p.m., about two and a half hours after officers first arrived. Police closed a portion of Illinois Street while SWAT units conducted operations.
