IMPD: Double stabbing stemmed from burglary attempt

INDIANAPOLIS - A would-be burglar stabbed two people early Friday morning on the east side of Indianapolis, police say.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched around 12:10 a.m. to the 1500 block of East Michigan Street.

They found a woman with multiple stab wounds and a man who'd been stabbed at least once. Both were taken to an area hospital. Police didn't disclose the extent of their injuries.

Police believe the stabbing stemmed from an attempted burglary, with the would-be burglary running into the victims during the attempted theft.

"He couldn't burglarize anymore, so he had to get out and he didn't get anything," said Capt. John Arvin with IMPD. "He was not able to steal anything. Hopefully these victims are going to be okay."

Investigators received varying descriptions of the weapon used in the attack.

We have a couple different descriptions of the weapon, like a machete-type weapon and also kind of like a flashlight weapon with a taser on the end of it," Arvin said.

After stabbing the two individuals, the man sought refuge in an abandoned apartment. As officers closed in on the location, he tried to escape by breaking a window and climbing out. However, he cut himself in the abdomen in the process. Police were then able to take him into custody.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
