INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis metro police are investigating an attempted rape that occurred early Thursday morning along the Monon Trail.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called around 5:45 a.m. to Sutherland Avenue on the Monon Trail after receiving reports that an attempted rape had taken place in the area.
IMPD said officers arrived on the scene and spoke with a woman and a man. The male told police he found the woman on the trail after the alleged incident had already occurred. The woman went on to tell detectives that she was running on the trail when a man wearing dark clothing allegedly attacked her, according to IMPD.
The suspect fled the area before police arrived to investigate.
The department said it has increased the number of patrols along the Monon and surrounding trails and encouraged visitors to stay on marked trails, plan their route and remain aware of their surroundings.
Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the IMPD Sex Crimes Unit at 317-327-3330.
