IMPD makes arrest after 2 related Monon Trail attempted rape investigations

INDIANAPOLIS -- Detectives with the sex crimes unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department have arrested a 27-year-old after two related attempted rape investigations on the Monon Trail earlier this month.




According to a news release from IMPD, Larry Duerson was taken into custody on Thursday in the 3400 block of N Keystone Ave. on preliminary charges of kidnapping, attempted rape and strangulation.




On Aug. 8, officers with IMPD's north district responded to the Monon Trail on an attempted rape investigation that reportedly occurred that morning. At the time, detectives learned that the victim was reportedly attacked by a man, later identified as Duerson, and officers were able to locate witnesses who reportedly intervened.

On Aug. 14, officers responded to the Monon Trail again in relation to an additional attempted rape investigation. The release said that the victim was reportedly attacked in a similar manner to the first incident.




"After speaking further ot the victim and witnesses, detectives believed the two attackes were related," the release read. "Sex crime detectives were assigned to the investigation.




The release said that detectives used forensic evidence, along with victim and witness statements, to connect the two incidents. Through this investigation, Duerson was identified as the suspect.








"These were violent and senseless attacks on community members who were simply enjoying the Monon Trail," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Chris Bailey said in the release. "Because of the dedication of our officers, detectives, the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, and our partners, we were able to quickly identify and arrest the suspect. I am especially grateful for the courage of the victims and the Good Samaritans who came forward. Their bravery, together with the commitment of our officers, demonstrates the strength of our community and our shared commitment to keep our public spaces safe."




The release said that detectives are continuing to investigate and review evidence that could lead to additional criminal charges for Duerson. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decisions.
