INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is making changes to its VIN inspection process starting Tuesday.
According to IMPD, the department will offer VIN, or vehicle identification number, inspections at roll call locations throughout the week instead of during patrols.
Residents, nonprofit or for-profit businesses are able to bring their respective printed BMV forms and vehicles to any IMPD roll call during the following dates and times for the free inspection:
Monday
7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southeast District, located at 1150 Shelby St.
Tuesday
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Southwest District, located at 551 King Ave.
Wednesday
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northwest District, located at 4005 Office Plaza Blvd.
Thursday
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the East District, located at 201 Shadeland Ave.
Friday
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the North District, located at 3120 E 30th St.
"Every minute counts when someone's safety is at risk," IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said in a news release from the department. "By shifting non-emergency tasks like VIN inspections to roll call sites, we're making sure our patrol officers are available to respond to violent crimes and in-progress calls."
According to IMPD's website, the VIN inspection is required by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles when a vehicle is purchased outside of the state or if a vehicle is manufactured without a VIN. Vehicles not previously titled in Indiana are also required to be inspected.
"We appreciate your support as we continue to serve Indy safely and efficiently," IMPD officials said in a post on social media.
IMPD officials said on their website that officers can be dispatched to a home or specific address for an inspection in "limited circumstances." For more information, click here.
