INDIANAPOLIS -- A 20-year-old has been arrested after a reported fatal shooting at Eagle Creek Park on the Fourth of July.
According to a news release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Eython Garcia has been taken into custody on preliminary charges of:
- Murder
- Attempted murder
- Battery by means of a deadly weapon
- Criminal recklessness
On July 4, officers with IMPD's northwest district responded to a reported shooting at Eagle Creek Park. When officers arrived, they located two men with reported gunshot wounds. One of the men, later identified as 23-year-old David Lira-Mojica, was later pronounced dead. The other man was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
As IMPD homicide detectives were investigating the shooting, officers were reportedly informed of possible suspects nearby. IMPD officials said that with the assistance of the department's K9 unit and the aviation unit, multiple suspects were taken into custody.
The release said that the suspects were interviewed and were released pending further investigation. As the investigation continued, homicide detectives identified Garcia as the primary suspect in the shooting.
On Sunday, a warrant for Garcia's arrest was issued. IMPD's violent crimes unit, along with the U.S. Marshal's Task Force, located and apprehended Garcia within hours of the warrant being issued.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision for Garcia, officials with IMPD said.
