INDIANAPOLIS - Is a free cup of coffee worth a trip to jail?
Court documents reveal that one man took a lie too far in pursuit of saving a few bucks.
On Wednesday, Indianapolis police officers were called to a Speedway Gas Station on W. 65th Street shortly after midnight. These weren't the first "officers" to walk into the gas station that day.
According to an employee, a man wearing body armor under a blue polo shirt had walked into the Speedway on Tuesday morning and asked the clerk, "Do law enforcement officers get free coffee?"
When told they did, the man poured himself a cup and walked out. No identification shown.
Just after midnight, he returned and told the clerk he was there for "extra security." He again claimed to be a law enforcement officer. Suspicious, the clerk called the actual police.
When confronted by Indy metro police, the so-called police officer claimed to work for the "president and other government agencies." Police noted various pins on his soft body armor vest, including a "Joint Chief of Staff" pin and a "Grassroots Army Firearms Policy Coalition" patch.
The so-called officer did end up inside a police car, though it wound up being in the backseat in a pair of handcuffs.
For stealing a cup of coffee and impersonating a police officer, the man faces potential misdemeanor charges.
