IMPD: Reckless driving investigation leads to 3 unrelated arrests

INDIANAPOLIS -- An investigation into a reckless driving incident that caused a portion of I-70 to close early Sunday morning led to three unrelated arrests.

According to a post on social media from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a detective from IMPD was driving on I-70 around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday when he reportedly saw a Dodge Challenger traveling more than 100 mph and "committing several reckless driving offenses."

The detective reportedly attempted to stop the Challenger, but a pursuit began when the driver did not stop. The post read that the pursuit ended when an officer conducted a PIT maneuver. The driver of the Challenger reportedly gunned the vehicle's engine and struck two IMPD police vehicles before the car became stuck.

"The driver jumped out and took off on foot," the post read. "IMPD K9 units and an enthusiastic young officer gave chase, but the driver was unfortunately not located."

The post read that this incident caused a portion of I-70 to be closed for a short time. When officers opened one lane, officials said an intoxicated driver reportedly backed into another car. That driver was arrested by Indiana State Police troopers for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

As law enforcement was investigating the two incidents, they reportedly saw a truck "slowly begin to roll towards them." The truck rolled past the crash and reportedly went between two police cars blocking the interstate and crashed into the Challenger.

The post read that the driver and the passenger inside the truck "both appeared to be passed out" and did not wake up after the crash. When law enforcement woke them up, both reportedly resisted arrest. The driver was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement while the passenger was arrested for resisting law enforcement.

The incident wasn't the only thing keeping police busy over the weekend.

On Saturday night and early Sunday morning, law enforcement officials, including IMPD, ISP and the Beech Grove Police Department, came together to "address spinning and reckless driving across the city," resulting in:

  • Around 47 uniform traffic tickets

  • More than seven arrests

  • Two stolen vehicle recoveries

  • Multiple vehicles towed

  • Several warnings issued

"Reckless driving, spinning, and street takeovers are dangerous to participants, onlookers and disrespectful to those who are trying to use the roadway appropriately," the post read. "These enforcement efforts will continue, and spinning and reckless driving will not be tolerated."
