INDIANAPOLIS -- A 16-year-old was arrested in Carmel in relation to a fatal shooting that occurred on the south side of Indianapolis in late July.
According to previous reports, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a reported crash in the 400 block of Griffin Road in the early morning hours of July 25.
When officers arrived, they found that the driver of the vehicle, later identified as 20-year-old Edier Hernandez-Rivera, had been shot. Hernandez-Rivera was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.
An update from IMPD on Tuesday said that at the crime scene, multiple shell casings were reportedly scattered on the ground. When homicide detectives responded, they worked to identify evidence, search the area for possible video and interview witnesses.
As the investigation continued, a 16-year-old was identified as the suspect in the shooting. A warrant for the teen's arrest was issued on Sept. 13. Two days later, detectives with IMPD's violent crimes unit located the teen at a home in Carmel.
"We are thankful for the community partnerships, the diligent work of the men and women of the IMPD and the technology investments the city has made in the department, all of which made this arrest possible," the department said in the update.
