IMPD: Woman killed in shooting on east side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - A woman was killed in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Wednesday night.




According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 6400 block of Massachusetts Avenue around 9:30 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult female with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

IMPD has confirmed that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.




Law enforcement believes the shooting unfolded outside an event center located in the 6400 block of Massachusetts Avenue.




Police indicated that they are actively searching for at least one suspect who is believed to have been involved in the shooting. IMPD described the suspect as an adult male.




Per IMPD, the suspect is believed to have fled the scene after the shooting. Police do not know if the suspect left the scene on foot or in a vehicle.




Detectives indicated that they located numerous shell casings on the ground at the shooting scene. Police confirmed that some of the shell casings they found on the ground were different calibers, meaning multiple weapons may have been used during the shooting.




IMPD indicated that it is still trying to identify any witnesses who may have seen the shooting. Because the shooting happened near an event center, police are hoping there were multiple people that saw the incident unfold.




Detectives are also attempting to obtain security video of the shooting and review it.




"Summertime is great in Indiana," IMPD Night Watch Captain John Arvin said during a media briefing. "It's a little humid sometimes, but the weather is normally beautiful. We got the Pacers, we got the Fever, we got the race coming up. People just need to come and be calm, cool and collected. And one thing I like to say, if you think there's a chance you might get into something, leave your weapons at home. Try to talk it out before we fight it out. That's one of my mottos."
