IMS Museum announces plans for car restoration, event facility to exhibit vehicle collection

SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum has announced plans to construct a new car restoration and event facility near Speedway.

According to a news release, the museum's new Restoration and Event Facility will feature space for a full-time restoration department "to continue preserving and caring for the vehicle collection."

This will include six restoration bays, two detailing bays and a dedicated space for vehicle storage. The 60,000 square foot facility will also feature an event space. The museum also added that it intends to host exhibits and public tours of the new facility. The new facility will be located at 1111 Polco Street just outside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"We are thrilled to share the location and initial designs for the new Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Restoration and Event Facility," said Joe Hale, president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. "This has always been a plan for the next phase of the Museum, and thanks to the monumental support during our recent capital campaign, we can begin this project this summer."

This marks the latest step in the museum's ongoing expansion, which officially began in 2023.

"With the growth of our restoration program, we need to increase our workspace and storage facility to allow for the constant preservation of vehicles," said Jason Vansickle, vice president of curation and education. "Our restoration team is unmatched in skill, and this new state-of-the-art facility will be one of the best museum restoration facilities in the country."

The facility will also feature an education program where students can participate in hands-on learning experiences.

"The Town of Speedway is proud to welcome the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum's new Restoration & Event Facility to our community," said Nick Sturgeon, Town Council President. "This project not only honors the town's rich racing heritage but represents a significant economic investment in our community, bringing new jobs, increased activity, and long-term growth to the area. We are proud to support a development that will contribute so meaningfully to our local economy, strengthening Speedway's position as a hub for innovation, craftsmanship, and motorsports excellence."

The facility is slated to be completed by late 2026.
