INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has announced the firing of 123 employees to "remain fiscally responsible" following recent budget cuts.
DWD confirmed in a statement to FOX59/CBS4 that 123 employees have been let go, with the department attributing these to "budget reductions at both the state and federal levels."
Last month, more than 100 positions at the Indiana Office of Commerce and the Indiana Department of Education were trimmed as lawmakers sought to adjust the final budget to account for a budget shortfall exceeding $2 billion
DWD confirmed the latest round of layoffs Monday evening, including the following breakdown:
- Admin: 18
- Workforce Programs: 48
- Unemployment Insurance: 57
DWD added that the decision was made with "great care and consideration."
"The Department of Workforce Development experienced budget reductions at both the state and federal levels. As a result, operational adjustments were necessary to ensure we remain fiscally responsible in how we serve Indiana," DWD said. "The decision to reduce staff was made with great care and consideration. Our teams work with Hoosiers every day- including those navigating unemployment- and that perspective helped guide our decision-making process."
