Indiana man who was shot by US Secret Service members to be sentenced on Tuesday

WASHINGTON - An Indiana man who was shot by members of the United States Secret Service in March is slated to be sentenced on Tuesday.




Court records indicate Andrew Dawson's sentencing date was set on July 14. He accepted a plea agreement in May.




A copy of the agreement, which was obtained by FOX59/CBS4, indicates Dawson pleaded guilty to carrying a pistol without a license. Remaining counts Dawson faced were dropped as part of the deal.




An incident supplement created by law enforcement in Washington D.C. indicates Dawson originally faced the following charges:

• Possession of a BB gun





• Carrying a pistol without a license





• Carrying a rifle or shotgun outside a home or business





• Possession of an unregistered firearm or destructive device





• Possession of unregistered ammunition

An incident narrative obtained by FOX59/CBS4 indicates Dawson was shot by members of the U.S. Secret Service around 11:30 p.m. on March 8. Dawson was shot in the 1700 block of G Street NW, which borders the White House.




Before Dawson was shot, local law enforcement had issued a notice to other officials about him. That notice indicated that Dawson was armed and possibly suicidal.




Secret Service agents began surveilling Dawson when he hit the streets surrounding the White House. Additional agents responded to the area while others continued to monitor Dawson.




Ultimately, members of the secret service ordered Dawson to stop in the 1700 block of G Street NW. Police's narrative on the incident indicates the subsequent actions Dawson took after federal agents ordered him to stop are currently unclear. A security camera in the area did capture the encounter, though according to law enforcement, Dawson was obscured from the camera's view.




The actions Dawson took led members of the secret service to shoot him. Upon a search of his person, law enforcement located a BB gun.




The law enforcement narrative on the incident also indicates Dawson possessed a "folding cell phone handgun." The weapon did not have a visible serial number, according to police.




Investigators believe the weapon was "designed to expel a projectile by the action of an explosion." The device reportedly had a barrel length of less than 12 inches and could be fired with one hand.




Law enforcement also located Dawson's vehicle in the 1700 block of F Street NW. Inside the car, investigators found a rifle, a 30-round magazine and 23 rounds.




Previous reporting on the incident indicates no secret service agents were injured during the shooting. Law enforcement did not provide an update on Dawson's condition at the time the shooting occurred.




President Donald Trump was not believed to have been at the White House when Dawson was shot. Reports indicated that Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago home when the shooting happened.
