Indiana politicians react to shooting of Conservative activist Charlie Kirk
INDIANAPOLIS -- Dozens of Indiana politicians have taken to social media to express condolences to the family of Conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday during an "American Comeback Tour" event in Utah. He was 31 years old.
As part of that tour, Kirk was scheduled to visit Bloomington, Indiana, next month. Kirk had previously visited Purdue University in West Lafayette in April.
In accordance with a directive from President Donald Trump, Gov. Mike Braun directed all flags to be flown at half-staff Thursday in honor of Kirk. That directive will remain in effect through sundown on Sunday.
"There's no place for political violence," Congressman Jim Baird (R-Indiana) said.
"I think it's very sad that in this country we're having those kinds of things occur."
"The national dialogue is about to get very serious about the political assassinations that have happened over the past several months," Congressman Marlin Stutzman (R-Indiana) said. "I don't care if you're a Republican, you're a Democrat, you're conservative, you're liberal; it is never ever right to take another person's life over political disagreements."
Indiana Treasurer Daniel Elliott attended Utah Valley University, the university where Kirk was assassinated. Elliott's daughter is a student there now.
"It's one of these things that was hard for her to process, hard for me to process, because you just realize this is a time when people should be able to get together, they're in college, they're learning, they're talking, they're discussing, and suddenly that open forum has been ripped away," Elliott said.
On Thursday, the bipartisan Indiana Future Caucus condemned Kirk's murder and called for an end to political violence.
"I think it's just important that we all come together as Hoosiers and that we condemn such violence in our society," State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle) said.
"We, as a future caucus, would like to see a return to decorum and mutual respect in the shared humanity as fellow Americans," State Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D-Fishers) said.
In a statement following Kirk's assassination, Gov. Braun said:
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk. Political violence has no place in our communities. My prayers are with his family."
Kirk's body will be flown on Air Force Two to his hometown in Arizona. President Trump said he will posthumously award Kirk the Medal of Freedom: the nation's highest civilian award.
