Indiana State Fair comments on PA technical issue that occurred during Tuesday's severe weather
INDIANAPOLIS -- Officials with the Indiana State Fair are commenting after a reported public address system technical issue that occurred during a severe weather emergency on Tuesday.
At 1:55 p.m., the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Event Center posted on social media that severe weather was an "immediate threat" at the fairgrounds, causing entry gates to close at the time. Attendees were asked to seek shelter if they were inside. The all clear was given at 2:49 p.m. that day.
During the severe weather emergency, Indiana State Fair officials stated that there was a technical issue with a PA system device located at the Main Street grandstand.
"As a result, the emergency messages were not audible to everyone in that area," the statement read. "Once we became aware of the malfunction, our team immediately prioritized the repair and restored the system as quickly as possible. Additionally, our staff was sheltering in place to ensure their safety as well, which contributed to the brief delay in addressing the issue. We understand the importance of clear communication during emergencies and are taking steps to prevent similar issues in the future."
More than a decade ago, on Aug. 13, 2011, the Indiana State Fair's stage collapsed as attendees were waiting for a Sugarland show to begin, causing the deaths of seven people. This comes after a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Marion County and the area saw strong winds.
