Indiana State Police investigating fatal shooting on east side of Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that unfolded on the east side of Indianapolis Monday night.
According to ISP Sergeant John Perrine, the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force - a multi-agency law enforcement initiative - was attempting to execute an arrest warrant in the 4500 block of East Washington Street when the shooting happened.
ISP confirmed that ICGTF members knocked on the door of an apartment as they attempted to serve the warrant around 6:30 p.m.
Law enforcement's first and second knocks at the door were not answered. Soon after police knocked on the door for a second time, a gun went off inside the apartment.
After the shot was fired, the apartment door opened, and adult and toddler emerged from the unit. ISP indicated that the adult was taken into custody and the child was cared for by proper authorities.
Police then entered the apartment in question and found a deceased male suffering from a gunshot wound. At this point in their investigation, state police believe the decedent sustained self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
"Early indications are that it is possibly a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Perrine said. "But we don't want to rule anything out at this point."
Per ISP, no police officers discharged their weapons during the incident. No officers were injured either.
As of 8:30 p.m., ISP investigators believed the only person injured in the shooting was the decedent. Police also reported that the decedent was the person they were attempting to arrest before the shooting occurred.
Police indicated that they were investigating the individual because they believed he was a violent felon who illegally possessed firearms.
"At this time, we have a lot more question than answers," Perrine said. "You can see a large police presence behind us. It's important that we preserve the evidence inside the apartment - not only to answer questions about this crime but also potentially linking to any other crimes that may have been associated with this person or these guns that we believe are in there.
"At this time, we don't have very much more information to release. It's an active scene, an active investigation. We're waiting on more warrants to go through some of the crime scene investigation things that we need to do to answer a lot of the questions that we have."
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
