(KTLA/NEXSTAR) - A lone Hoosier chicken joint found itself ranked among the top 50 best fried chicken restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.
According to Yelp Elites, Root & Bone is the best place in Indiana to chow down on some hot, crispy fried chicken. The southern-style chicken restaurant is located at College and 46th Street and boasts a 4.4 out of 5 rating on Yelp with more than 700 reviews.
Root & Bone's menu features a mouthwatering fried chicken brined in sweet tea and served with a side of honey hot sauce- purchased as a half or whole bird.
"Fried chicken: amazing. Perfectly crispy and tender," said one Yelp reviewer.
Several users praised the honey hot sauce, saying it alone is worth a trip to the restaurant.
Howlin' Ray's in California was placed at the top of the pecking order in the Yelp Elite rankings.
Members of the Yelp Elite Squad described Howlin' Ray's as a "legendary spot" known for "serving up Nashville-style hot chicken that draws crowds for its fiery flavor and crispy, juicy perfection."
Howlin' Rays and Root & Bone were just two of many top-tier chicken chains found throughout the U.S., according to Yelp's Elite Squad. Their complete rankings include restaurants in 18 states, including nine restaurants in California, five in Florida and four in Texas. Missing from the list is Wagner's Village Inn, located in the small Indiana town of Oldenburg. Despite being off the beaten path, Wagner's fried chicken was previously honored with one of the most prestigious prizes in the country: a James Beard award.
Wagner's didn't crack the list of Yelp Elites, however, with only 155 reviews on the platform.
To compile the rankings, Yelp's analysts studied only the rankings and reviews from its "Elite Squad" - a group of users who have demonstrated a knack for going "above and beyond" with their reviews and photos, according to Yelp. The platform's analysts also tried to limit the list to restaurants with a "passing health score" in instances where that information was available.
More information on Yelp's Elite Squad, and how to become a member, are available at Yelp's official site.
