INDOT: At least 1 dead after multiple semis crash, catch fire on Interstate 65 in Jasper County

JASPER COUNTY, Ind. - At least one person is dead after multiple semis crashed and caught on fire on Interstate 65 in Jasper County Monday night.




Per a notification from the Indiana Department of Transportation, all lanes of I-65 southbound were closed at mile marker 218 near Rensselaer because three semis were involved in a crash in the area sometime before 11:15 p.m. Two of the semis involved in the crash caught fire.

In an update it sent about the crash around 12:15 a.m., INDOT indicated that all lanes of I-65 were still closed. The agency also reported that at least one person was killed during crash and subsequent fires.




INDOT has reported that Indiana State Police are investigating the crash. As of 12:30 a.m., ISP had not provided a timetable in which it expects the roadway to reopen.




ISP diverted traffic off of I-65 and onto State Road 14 at mile marker 220 to help keep traffic moving while its troopers cleaned up and investigated the crash.




As of this article's publication, no additional information on the crash had been made available.




Monday's crash marked the second time a major semi crash and fire has happened along I-65 in Jasper County this year. In April, a semi hauling paint cans burst into flames on I-65 southbound at mile marker 231 near Demotte and Roselawn.
