Indy man charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to kill his estranged wife twice

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man is charged with two counts of attempted murder and five other felonies after police claim he repeatedly tried to kill his estranged wife this month.
The victim claims her husband first got behind the wheel and tried to run her over and kill her outside the Goodwill Outlet near 42nd and Franklin Road where she works.
When that failed, the next day the suspect allegedly became even more violent. Breaking into an east side home on Graham avenue through a window and sneaking upstairs, police believe 46-year-old Carlton Gray fired five shots, shooting his wife in the leg and threatening to kill her current boyfriend.
According to court records, the shooting victim told police she separated from Gray in March and since the breakup, the suspect has repeatedly harassed her at work, called her dozens of times and said on multiple occasions, "I'm going to kill you."
While the victim survived her injuries, domestic violence awareness advocates said cases like this illustrate that exiting a volatile relationship can be a dangerous and deadly time.
"When you're leaving a domestic violence relationship, the lethality level goes up," said Danyette Smith with Indy Champions.
Smith urges people to reach out for help and develop a safety plan if anyone feels they could be harmed by their domestic partner.
"The big picture is, if you're leaving a relationship that is dangerous, you want to reach out to an advocate to develop a safety plan," said Smith.
In addition to attempted murder, Gray is also charged with burglary, intimidation and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
The suspect is due in court on Thursday for an initial hearing. In the meantime, the court set his bond at $200,000 surety.
