INDIANAPOLIS - Despite previous comments saying he may attend this year's Indianapolis 500, President Donald Trump will not be at the Speedway on May 25.
Multiple sources confirmed Friday to FOX59/CBS4 that the President will not be coming to this year's race. This comes after Trump hinted last month that he'd like to go to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
The president hosted several Team Penske racing champions on April 8 at the White House. Roger Penske - owner of IndyCar and the IMS - was at hand as Trump congratulated the winning drivers.
"What you've done in Indianapolis, also, with the track and everything is really incredible," Trump told Penske. "People tell me it's amazing, I'll have to get there, maybe this year."
Penske responded by telling the president he has an open invitation to attend the 2025 race. If he attended, Trump would become the first ever sitting President to attend the race.
During a press conference on Friday, officials were asked whether or not Trump would take Penske up on his offer. The Speedway directed all questions to the White House.
Now, several sources have confirmed that the President will not be attending. We are working now to confirm more information surrounding his possible visit.
IMS and IndyCar officials announced Friday that the race is nearly sold out and on pace to match 2016's race in ticket sales. J. Douglas Boles, the president of INDYCAR and IMS, said IMS grandstands and suites are expected to be sold out, totaling more than 250,000 tickets.
Boles said that as of Friday, under "four-digits in tickets" remain for the race and expects an official sellout by the end of the day on Monday. General admission tickets will continue to be sold.
