ISP: Drunk Maryland man clocked going 125 mph on State Road 37

HARRODSBURG, Ind. - Court documents reveal that an allegedly drunken Maryland man claimed he was just trying to go home to Maryland after leading troopers on a 130 mph chase that ended with the fleeing vehicle's tires being blown out.

Brandon Stewart, 25, of Beltsville, Maryland, was arrested late Wednesday night on the side of Interstate 69. The next day, he was officially charged with resisting law enforcement as a Level 6 felony in addition to multiple misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving.

According to court documents, a state trooper was conducting a traffic stop on State Road 37 at roughly 10:50 p.m. on Aug. 6 near Harrodsburg in Monroe County when a gray Infiniti passenger car flew past at an estimated speed of more than 100 mph.

The trooper jumped in his patrol vehicle and pursued the Infiniti, catching up to the car at Smithville Road and State Road 37. The Infiniti allegedly ignored the trooper's lights and sirens and continued to flee at speeds of 125 mph.

According to the trooper, the Infiniti sped through a construction zone and then merged onto I-69 northbound. Once on the interstate, the vehicle reached speeds of more than 130 mph while fleeing from police.

Stop sticks deployed by a Martinsville police officer eventually blew out the Infiniti's tires near the 142 mile marker and the fleeing car at last pulled over. Police said Stewart was sitting behind the wheel when police approached the Infiniti. His eyes were allegedly red and glossy, according to the police report, and he gave no reason for fleeing police other than saying he was trying to get home to Maryland and had just left Bedford.

A certified breath test revealed Stewart to have a .155% blood alcohol content. A "ghost gun," meaning the firearm had no serial number, was also located within Stewart's vehicle.

According to court documents, Stewart told police he was unable to purchase a handgun in Maryland so he went to "the streets" to purchase the gun.

In Indiana, a Level 6 felony conviction carries a maximum sentence of two and a half years.
