HANOVER, Ind. -- A 25-year-old Hanover woman was arrested after a crash earlier this year killed her 6-year-old daughter and caused multiple injuries.
According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, Dorothy Snell was charged with:
- One count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 felony
- One count of causing death when operating a motor vehicle with an ACE of .08 or more, a Level 4 felony
- Two counts of causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle with an ACE of .08 or more, each a Level 4 felony
- One count of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, a Level 5 felony
- Two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, each a Level 6 felony.
On the evening of May 13, officers from the Austin Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff's Department responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Road 256 and U.S. 31.
The release stated that a Toyota Camry was reportedly traveling westbound on State Road 256 and entered the intersection to turn south onto U.S. 31 on a green light. At the same time, a Chrysler reportedly driven by Snell ran the red light and collided with the Camry.
Officials said the driver and a passenger in the Camry were transported to a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Snell, a front-seat passenger and a 2-year-old child were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Snell's 6-year-old daughter, who was in the backseat of the Chrysler, was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead, the release said.
As the investigation into the crash occurred, officials allege that the Chrysler "was exceeding the posted speed limit and ran the red light on U.S. 31." The 6-year-old was also not reportedly in a child safety seat or booster seat and was secured only by a seatbelt.
The release said that according to Indiana law, all children under the age of 8 is required to use a "child restraint system in accordance with the.... manufacturer's instructions, which are based upon the child's height and weight."
The investigation also found that Snell's blood alcohol concentration level was above the state's legal limit of 0.08%, the release said.
The release said that Snell was arrested and transported to the Scott County Jail on Wednesday evening. Court documents indicate that Snell's initial hearing was scheduled for Friday morning in Scott County court. The court set Snell's bond at $250,000, full cash only.
