MADISON, Ind. -A man has been arrested in Jefferson County after he allegedly stole almost $1 million from his elderly grandmother.
Eric Dyer, 54, was arrested Thursday by the Madison Police Department on a warrant charging him with theft, money laundering and elder abuse. Dyer, a South Carolina resident, is accused of stealing large amounts of money from his grandmother living in Jefferson County.
State Troopers began investigating Dyer in May 2024 after a bank reported several suspicious transactions involving his grandmother, who was staying at an assisted living center in Madison.
Investigators learned that Dyer had been named his grandmother's legal guardian in 2021. A review of bank records showed that, between 2022 and 2024, he allegedly withdrew nearly $1 million from the woman's bank accounts.
While Dyer was reportedly using the money for personal expenses, investigators learned he was behind in paying his grandmother's assisted living fees.
A warrant was recently issued by the Jefferson County Prosecutor's Office charging Dyer with the following felonies:
- Theft
- Money Laundering
- Corrupt Business Influence,
- Neglect of a Dependent.
Additionally, Dyer was charged with a misdemeanor count of elder abuse. He is now being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
