Juvenile injured in shooting in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, Ind. - A juvenile was injured in a shooting in Cumberland Sunday afternoon.




During a media briefing, a spokesperson for the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Coolee Lane - which is located just off of 10th Street - around 3:48 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located a juvenile male who had been shot in the leg.

CMPD reported that the juvenile was transported from the scene to a local hospital in stable condition.




Police reported that they found a small crime scene inside a home in the area. Investigators are still working to determine if somebody shot the juvenile or if he sustained self-inflicted gunshot wounds.




CMPD Detective Sergeant Mark Waggoner indicated that Sunday's incident marked the third shooting that has unfolded in Cumberland in the last eight days. Each of the three incidents involved juveniles, including a shooting that left an adult and juvenile injured on July 26.




"Cumberland has had a shooting incident three times in the last eight days - all within the same kind of area and all involving juveniles," Waggoner said. "It's getting exhausting. You know, again, I don't think this is just a community problem. I think our city and our county and our state are having the same issues. We really need press upon some kind of answer. I don't know what that answer is.




"The community needs to come together and start parenting and start understanding why and how our juveniles are getting their hands on guns all the time. Like I said, it's just really frustrating for us because we're out here and we see the violence and see kids getting hurt. Officers don't like that, we don't like to deal with that. It's hard for them to continually see that every day. So, yeah, it's just a real problem for us."
