Lawyers for fired IU cybersecurity professor confirms he is safe, not charged

(WXIN/WTTV) -- Lawyers for XiaoFeng Wang, a former cybersecurity expert at Indiana University at the center of an FBI probe, confirmed that Wang and his wife are not facing any charges.

Jason Covert, an attorney with Taft Law Firm, told FOX59/CBS4 Wednesday afternoon that Wang and Nianli Ma have not been arrested and have not been charged with a crime.

"While we are unable to provide substantive comment on the investigation at this time, Prof. Wang and Ms. Ma are thankful for the outpouring of support they have received from colleagues at Indiana University and their peers across the academic community," Covert said. "They look forward to clearing their names and resuming their successful careers at the conclusion of this investigation."

Questions have been mounting about the couple's whereabouts and the meaning of the probe after the FBI conducted raids at their homes in Bloomington and Carmel last Friday.

As of this article's publication, the FBI and IU have not elaborated on the exact reasons federal authorities are investigating the couple.

According to previous reports, Wang worked at IU for 21 years where he was a noted leader in the fields of cybersecurity and privacy.

The Bloomington Chapter of the American Association of University Professors has published a letter criticizing IU's decision to terminate Wang's tenure at the university.
