Man sentenced to 110 years for killing 2 people on Indy's near east side
INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indy man has been sentenced to over 100 years in prison for his role in a double murder on the city's east side two years ago.
According to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, Jermaine Randle received a 110-year sentence for the 2023 shooting deaths of 50-year-old Larry Moorman and his 23-year-old stepson, Shawn Barnett. He was convicted of two counts of murder following the conclusion of a two-day jury trial in April.
According to previous reports, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called on Jan. 12, 2023, to the 200 block of Walcott Street after receiving reports of a possible shooting.
IMPD reported at the time that officers arrived on the scene and found Barnett and Moorman inside an apartment suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead on the scene by detectives.
A combination of eyewitnesses and license plate reading technology led detectives to Randle within two hours of the fatal shootings. One of the witnesses police spoke with reported hearing a man shout from inside the victims' apartment after several gunshots rang out, MCPO said. This same witness recalled watching Randle exit the apartment before he fled the scene in his vehicle.
Randle was taken into custody near a laundromat and subsequently questioned about his involvement in the killings.
Court documents revealed that Randle had accused the victims of raping one his female acquaintances and was motivated by revenge. During the interview with police, Randle reportedly displayed "bizarre" behavior, including throwing tables and chairs before allegedly masturbating and urinating on the floor, previous reporting showed.
This behavior was believed to be fueled by an "extreme" drug problem, according to the MCPO.
"The defendant will spend more than a century behind bars for the unprovoked tragedy he inflicted on these men and their families," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said. "Our witnesses' commitment to Larry and Shawn to see this through was the difference maker in this case."
