Marion police arrest man accused of shooting, critically injuring 17-year-old
MARION, Ind. -- Police have arrested a man accused of shooting and critically injuring a 17-year-old during a reported drug deal in Marion Monday night.
Officers with the Marion Police Department were called around 6:50 p.m. to the 1500 block of S. Western Avenue after the Grant County Central Dispatch received reports that a person was possibly shot in the area.
MPD said officers arrived on the scene and found a 17-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers immediately began to assist until EMS arrived. While officers were still in the area, they soon learned that a white Pontiac had fled the scene shortly after the shooting occurred.
MPD said police found a vehicle matching this suspect's description a short time later, parked near an apartment complex in the 500 block of East 3rd Street. Detectives later determined that the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Cordel Bice, had attempted to hide the weapon he allegedly used in the incident near the intersection of 11th Street and Boots Street. Police recovered the gun from a trash can.
Preliminary information indicates the shooting occurred as Bice was allegedly trying to purchase marijuana vape cartridges from the shooting victim.
Bice was soon found inside a trailer located in the 1500 block of S. Miller Avenue. The suspect was detained without further incident and placed under arrest, according to MPD.
Bice was then transported to the Grant County Jail, where he faces preliminary charges of attempted murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
This incident remains under investigation.
