Missing person found dead in Madison County; Male subject arrested on murder charge
MADISON COUNTY, Ind. - Police arrested a man on a murder charge during their investigation of a missing persons case in Madison County earlier this week.
In a press release, the Anderson Police Department confirmed that it took a report about a missing person on Sunday. That case was assigned to APD's criminal investigations division.
On the same day police first took the report on the missing person, law enforcement located the missing person's vehicle. That vehicle was being driven by a male subject who was not the missing person police were looking for.
The driver of the missing person's vehicle - who police did not identify in their press release - was questioned by investigators and arrested on auto theft and forgery charges.
After they arrested the male subject, police continued their search for the missing person. In the 48 hours following their arrest of the male subject, police executed multiple search warrants and continued to follow leads they obtained on the missing person.
On Monday, law enforcement conducted a search near the intersection of County Road 700 South and Atlantic Road in Madison County. A drone was deployed during the search, and police subsequently located a dead body.
The Madison County Coroner was called to the scene to take possession of the body and help police continue their investigation. The coroner's office is still working to determine the decedent's exact manner and cause of death.
Police currently believe the body located during the search near County Road 700 South and Atlantic Road was that of the missing person. APD did not release the identity of the missing person in their press release.
The male subject police found driving the missing person's vehicle on Sunday now faces a preliminary charge of murder, in addition to the auto theft and forgery counts that were previously brought against him.
APD confirmed that the arrestee is still being held at the Madison County Jail on a 72-hour hold.
APD indicated that the name of the arrestee and missing person were withheld from its press release to "avoid hindering the investigation."
Police have submitted arrest affidavits related to the case to the Madison County Prosecutor's Office for review.
APD indicated that its investigation of the incident is still on going. Police are encouraging those with information on the missing person or arrestee to call detective Nolan Schaefer at (765) 648-6714.
Alternatively, tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana by calling (317) 262-8477.
