Multi-agency operation in northern Indiana leads to 68 arrests as police seize cocaine, meth, LSD
(WXIN/WTTV): Authorities arrested over 60 people on drug-related charges as part of a multi-agency collaboration targeting the distribution of narcotics in northern Indiana.
According to a news release, law enforcement conducted several patrols as part of "Operation Blue Thunder" on U.S. 31 in Miami and Fulton counties that resulted in 68 arrests on 163 charges, with the majority being drug-related.
Officers and deputies utilized K9s during the operation that took place between June 16 and June 19, which was specifically launched to "catch individuals who utilize Indiana roadways to transport and distribute illegal narcotics." ISP said law enforcement targeted U.S. 31 due to the significant number of motorists who pass through the area.
Police seized cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, edible marijuana food, MDMA, THC oil, ketamine, prescription medications, syringes and drug paraphernalia.
The collaboration included troopers with the Indiana State Police, the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Wabash County Sheriff's Office, Wabash Police Department and the Rochester Police Department.
Out of the 163 charges, ISP said 29 were felonies while officers also issued 102 traffic citations and 272 written warnings. Police also arrested two individuals for reportedly driving while impaired.
"This is the thirteenth year we have organized a summer driving season kickoff patrol," stated Indiana State Police Sgt. Andrew Smith. "The Indiana State Police wants to remind drivers to follow all traffic laws for the safety of everyone using Indiana roadways. Summer is a peak travel time, with an increased volume of motorists, and this patrol should serve as a warning that officers will utilize all available resources to catch and arrest those who transport illegal drugs."
