MUNCIE, Ind. - The city of Muncie has temporarily closed the Prairie Creek Reservoir Beach due to elevated algae levels.
The city reports that there are high levels of microcystins, which is a toxin produced by blue-green algae. Microcystins can cause skin rashes, liver damage, and more severe illnesses if ingested or inhaled in high concentrations, according to the City of Muncie officials.
During a test on the reservoir, officials found a level of 9.9, which surpassed the Environmental Protects Agency safety threshold of 8. The closure will remain until the beach has gone through treatment, and testing levels return to a safe range.
The reservoir is set to undergo an algae treatment starting on Monday, June 30. Treatment will be conducted using Cutrine PlusĀ® which is a chemical that is reported to be EPA-registered and safe for fish, livestock, and recreational activities.
The City of Muncie has posted signs at the site that tells guest that the water will be treated with chemicals.
