Muncie police make multiple arrests after shootings left 1 dead, 4 injured

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Muncie Police Department has been investigating multiple shootings that occurred earlier this month that resulted in five men being shot and one dying.
Previous reporting indicates that the shootings occurred across the city on Sept. 5 and 6, with police responding to Walnut, Monroe and Madison Streets to conduct investigations.
Initially, all three incidents were investigated separately until further investigation connected the shootings at Walnut and Madison. According to the Muncie PD, three people have since been arrested in connection with the Walnut and Madison Street shootings.
Ashuntiz Stewart was reportedly shot on Sept. 5 at around 8:36 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3200 block of South Walnut Street. He was later pronounced dead by the Delaware County Coroner's Office on Sept. 8.
Muncie PD discovered this was connected to a second shooting that night at 11:59 p.m., where two men were injured in a shooting that occurred in a parking lot in the 1100 block of South Madison Street.
On Sept. 8, 24-year-old Michael L. Jones was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and recklessness with a firearm.
Court documents show that a black Chevy Cruze pulled up to the scene at S. Walnut Street and approached the responding officers. Jones exited the vehicle while claiming that he had been shot in the leg.
Officers immediately began to provide first aid to Jones. He then admitted to being the shooter but told police that it was done out of self-defense, court documents said. Officers seized a black 10mm Glock handgun from the Chevy Cruze. One of the officers noted the slide on the handgun was locked back and empty of rounds.
According to police, Jones, Stewart and 21-year-old Lamont J.D. Howard had an altercation at the first Walnut Street location. Police said more than one gun was fired, resulting in both Jones and Stewart being shot.
On Wednesday, police continued their investigation by executing a search warrant in the 1300 block of East Kirby Avenue. As a result of the search warrant, 41-year-old Chandler W. Harris was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm. Since his arrest, Federal Probation has placed a detainer on Harris.
Howard was initially arrested on Sept. 18 in Anderson for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, all felonies.
On Friday, Howard received additional charges for murder in relation to the first shooting on Walnut Street, along with charges connected to the second shooting on S. Madison Street, including attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm.
