Next public hearing on proposed AES rate hike

INDIANAPOLIS - Residents will have another chance Monday night to weigh in on a proposed rate hike from AES Indiana.

The utility company is seeking an increase that would be phased in, with the first 7.5% increase in the second quarter of 2026 and a later 6% increase in January 2027.

For a residential customer using about 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month (around the average customer's usage), it would add about $21 to a monthly bill.

AES Indiana said the hike is needed to address operational costs, maintenance and future investments.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is holding a series of public field hearings on the matter where customers can voice their concerns about the rate increase.

Monday's meeting is slated for 6 p.m. at New Augusta North Public Academy, 6450 Rodebaugh Rd. Those planning to attend should get there about 15 minutes early for an overview of procedures and the rate case process.

There will be no final decision made at any of the hearings.

This is the third of four planned public hearings about the proposed AES rate increase. A fourth hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (Aug. 27) at the Fort Event Center at Fort Harrison State Park, 6002 N. Post Rd. (Blue Heron Ballroom).
