INDIANAPOLIS - An officer was seriously injured while attempting to arrest a man in downtown Indianapolis.
Robert Sanders Jr., 52, was arrested for the following:
- Battery
- Battery against a public safety official
- Resisting law enforcement causing injury
"Yesterday, two of our officers were injured in the line of duty, one who was shot at, and another while trying to take someone into custody who chose to resist arrest," said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Chris Bailey.
"These incidents are clear reminders of the risks our officers face every single day. I'm grateful both are expected to recover, and I want to thank them for their courage and commitment to protecting our city," Bailey continued.
Officers with the IMPD were dispatched on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 p.m. to a hotel near Jackson Place and South Illinois Street on a report of an assault.
Upon further investigation, officials learned that the victim had been sitting in a stairwell when Sanders allegedly approached him and yanked his beard.
IMPD officers later observed a man pacing back and forth while yelling at the hotel that looked like the man that victims described. The officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, but Sanders allegedly began yelling at the officers and calling them "devils."
Officers reportedly had to wrestle Sanders to the ground as he allegedly fought them. This was when the officer sustained a broken fibula.
This is an active investigation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
