Perry Township student overdoses at school; 2 arrested by school police
INDIANAPOLIS - A Perry Township student overdosed at school on Tuesday.
FOX59/CBS4 obtained a letter Perry Township Schools administrators sent to students' parents. In the letter, the district confirmed that one of its high school students was using a THC vape on school grounds.
Perry Township Schools confirmed the student overdosed because the THC vape they used contained fentanyl. School faculty indicated the student did not know there was fentanyl in the THC vape.
The district's police department and staff quickly provided assistance to the student who overdosed, administering Narcan twice. Perry Township Schools reported the student regained consciousness before first responders arrived. The student was still transported from the school to a local medical facility in stable condition.
Perry Township Schools identified the individuals believed to be responsible for the sale, purchase and distribution of the drugs. A public police report indicates the students were 15-year-old and 14-year-old boys.
Both student arrestees were charged with criminal recklessness - a Class B Misdemeanor - and dealing marijuana to a minor, a Level 5 Felony.
"This incident highlights the very real dangers associated with vaping, particularly as many of these vapes are being laced with dangerous and illicit substances," Perry Township Schools staff wrote in a letter to students' families. "While we are relieved that this situation did not result in a tragedy, it is crucial that we work together to ensure the safety of all students.
"It is urgent that you have a conversation with your child/children about the risks of ingesting hidden substances that can be dangerous and potentially deadly. Please emphasize the importance of caution, as vapes can contain harmful drugs without the user's knowledge."
The the wake of Tuesday's incident, Perry Township Schools encouraged students, faculty and other school stakeholders to report concerning behavior to the district's See Something, Say Something tip line at (317) 789-3905.
