Person found dead in vehicle with several dogs in Monroe County Walmart parking lot
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An adult was pronounced dead after being found inside a vehicle at a Walmart parking lot along with "numerous aggressive dogs."
According to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a Walmart in the 3500 block of W State Road 45 on Sunday afternoon. This comes after a 911 call reported that there was reportedly an unresponsive person inside a vehicle.
The caller said the vehicle reportedly struck a concrete light pole base and that the dogs were inside the vehicle, preventing access to the driver.
When officials with the Monroe Fire Protection District arrived on the scene, they reportedly found the adult inside the vehicle. They also reportedly saw eight dogs in the vehicle that were "acting aggressively."
"In an effort to render aid, firefighters opened the door, which allowed several dogs to escape and begin aggressively charging at bystanders and emergency responders," the release said.
Officials said that one civilian and one firefighter were reportedly bitten during the incident. Officials with the sheriff's office's Animal Management Division were able to capture five of the dogs as they roamed the parking lot. Three other dogs were captured later the same day.
The adult, who the office did not identify, was reportedly living out of the vehicle. The release said that the vehicle was "regularly seen" parked on the west side of the Walmart property.
The release said that surveillance footage from Walmart's parking lot reportedly showed the vehicle striking a light pole at around 8:20 a.m., an incident that was not reported until four hours later. Preliminary evidence states that the adult reportedly suffered a medical emergency, and no foul play is suspected.
The other injured individuals received treatment at a local hospital, the release said. Officials believe that all the dogs are accounted for but the office will continue to patrol the area over the next few days to "ensure any remaining dogs are captured."
