Police: Juvenile arrested, allegedly caused crash that killed Pitt football player, HSE grad
INDIANAPOLIS - A driver is in jail for allegedly causing the fatal crash that resulted in the death of University of Pittsburgh football player and Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate Mason Alexander.
According to police, a juvenile is in custody in connection with a March 1 crash that resulted in the death of a Fishers native, 18-year-old Mason Alexander.
On this date, a juvenile driver of a BMW was reportedly heading south on Florida Road from 113th Street. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said the driver entered the northbound lane as they attempted to pass a southbound car.
As the driver did so, the HCSO said they allegedly noticed a Toyota RAV4 heading northbound on Florida Road near Geist Park.
The BMW driver then swerved, left the roadway, drove into the grass, collided with a tree and caught fire, per the HCSO. Meanwhile, the Toyota also came off the road before hitting a mailbox.
Mason Alexander was in that BMW, the HCSO said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alexander had enrolled early at Pitt as a cornerback for their football team, following his graduation from HSE in December of 2024.
The 18-year-old's life was honored by the Fishers community at the Fishers Event Center on March 25. Here, Alexander's classmates and loved ones shared special memories they shared with the teen, which they called "Mason moments".
Yet Alexander's family was not given immediate answers on the crash. According to previous reports, the BMW driver was 17 years old and tested for drugs and alcohol, though neither their identity nor the results of the test were released.
"Something happened, and we want to know what happened, and they're not telling us anything, and it's not right," said Alexander's cousin, Adrian Johnson.
This led Alexander's family to hold a rally in his honor. Before it began, the HCSO issued a statement to both the family and the greater Fishers community.
"There are established policies and procedures that guide investigations and adherence to them are essential," the HCSO wrote. "Any deviation could compromise the integrity of the case, risk overlooking critical evidence, and ultimately, would not be fair to the Alexander family or anyone else involved."
The juvenile driver of the BMW does not have a court date set, according to online court records. All final charging decisions will come from the HCSO.
