Police use drone to find juvenile suspects in attempted robbery on Indy's east side
INDIANAPOLIS - Police used a drone to find juvenile suspects accused in an attempted robbery on Indy's east side.
On Saturday, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's East District responded to the 1400 block of Bosart Avenue, according to a social media post.
They talked to a man who said he was getting into his car when some juveniles approached and threatened him. They pulled on his car door and tried to take his keys; one of them tried to get in through the passenger side window to grab his cellphone and wallet.
The man eventually managed to pull his car door shut, and the juveniles took off.
The man called police and provided them with a good description of the suspects. That information was relayed to other officers, including an East District drone operator.
The operator used the drone to locate the juveniles and told other officers where to find them. Police quickly tracked down the suspects and took them into custody.
Detectives reviewed evidence at the scene, talked to witnesses and examined video surveillance footage. They ultimately detained two juveniles and released two others.
IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said drones provide information to officers in the field and give IMPD a "tactical edge" in quickly changing situations.
"Drone technology significantly enhances our ability to safely and efficiently locate suspects, missing persons, and critical evidence from the air," Bailey said in a news release.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make a final charging decision in the case.
