Reports: Man arrested twice in 3-year span for battering Indianapolis police officers

INDIANAPOLIS - Multiple reports indicate that a man has been arrested twice in the last three years for battering Indianapolis police officers
A report filed by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department over the weekend indicates 43-year-old Toriano Terrell Hellams was arrested after a foot pursuit in the 400 block of Bixler Road Saturday night.
Per the report, an officer was conducting routine patrol operations in the area when they attempted to stop a subject. The attempted "subject stop" resulted in a foot pursuit.
FOX59/CBS4 sent a crew to the scene at Bixler Road on Saturday night. Officers in the area indicated the foot pursuit began near a Travel Inn and ended by a Super 8. Officers at the scene also reported that the individuals involved in the pursuit sustained "very minor injuries."

IMPD's report indicates Hellams was preliminarily charged with the following after the pursuit:
- Battery of a public safety official involving bodily waste - a Level 5 Felony
- Battery resulting in injury to a public safety official - a Level 5 Felony
- Resisting law enforcement - a Class A Misdemeanor
- Possession of methamphetamine - a Level 6 Felony
- Possession of marijuana - a Class B Misdemeanor
- Possession of drug paraphernalia - a Class C Misdemeanor
Hellams was officially booked into the Marion County Jail on Sunday. His booking card indicates he is due in court on Tuesday.
Hellams was also arrested on charges related to battering law enforcement officials three years ago. In 2023, FOX59/CBS4 reported that Hellams was booked into the Marion County Jail on numerous felony charges - including battery of a law enforcement officer - in August 2022.
Previous reporting indicates the charges Hellams faced in 2022 were related to an incident in which he attacked police after first responders "revived" him from an overdose. During the 2022 encounter, Hellams reportedly "pulled, twisted and squeezed" an officer's testicles. Police also indicated that Hellams attempted to choke an officer during the 2022 incident.
Prior reports show that Hellams was booked into the Marion County Jail after his encounter with officers in 2022. He bailed out of jail after the incident but was rebooked three months later on drug charges that were not related to his original run-in with law enforcement.

Hellams was ultimately sentenced to two years in prison for attacking the officers in 2022. Hellams, however, was released from the Marion County Jail the same day he was sentenced.
FOX59/CBS4 reporting indicates a records mistake caused Marion County Jail staff to "erroneously" release Hellams from custody. Three weeks after he was released from jail, law enforcement was able to track him down and rebook him.
Holding records from the Indiana Department of Correction show that Hellams was projected to be released from prison in December 2024. If Hellams was released as projected in December, that would mean fewer than ninth months passed between his release from prison and his most recent arrest.
The most serious of the new charges Hellams faces is battery of a public safety official. In Indiana, the maximum penalty for a Level 5 Felony like battery of a public safety official is a six-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
As of this article's publication, no additional information on Hellams' latest case had been made available.
