RICHMOND, Ind. - Two people are in critical condition after police say a Richmond home exploded Thursday morning.
Firefighters with the Richmond Fire Department were called around 8:47 a.m. to a home in the 100 block of Randolph Street for a possible explosion and structure fire. RFD said first responders extinguished the flames shortly after arriving on the scene. No firefighters were injured while responding to the fire.
Officers with the Richmond Police Department also responded to assist. RPD said first responders arrived on the scene and quickly located two individuals suffering from "apparent burn injuries." Authorities provided immediate medical aid before they were later airlifted to a burn unit at Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, RPD said.
RPD added that two juvenile children were also assessed on the scene for potential smoke inhalation. As of this article's publication, their exact status was not provided.
An individual police identified as a "Good Samaritan" was also assessed and given medical clearance by emergency medical personnel. RPD thanked this individual for offering "emergency assistance" to those affected by the fire before officers and firefighters could arrive.

RPD noted that the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office is also assisting in the investigation.
"This was a dangerous and fast-moving situation, and I'm incredibly proud of the swift, courageous actions of our office, firefighters and medics," Richmond Assistant Chief of Police Adam Blanton said. "We're continuing to support the investigation and will work to ensure the families affected receive the help they need."
The exact cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation.
