Richmond man taken into custody after 'major drug seizure'

RICHMOND, Ind. -- A Richmond man was recently taken into custody after a traffic stop led to a "major drug seizure."

According to officials from the Richmond Police Department, detectives with the department's Strategic and Focused Enforcement, or SAFE, Crime Suppression Unit, conducted a traffic stop in the area of South 13th Street and South L Street on Monday.

During the stop, 29-year-old Tayonne Tevis was taken into custody after he was reportedly found to have more than 235 grams of illegal narcotics. Officials said this included suspected heroin and cocaine.

Court documents state that Tevis has been charged in Wayne County with one count of dealing in cocaine, a Level 2 felony, and one count of possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 3 felony.

"This arrest is a direct result of focused enforcement and relentless teamwork, Richmond Police Chief Kyle Weatherly said. "We are not sitting back while drugs destroy families. The men and women of RPD are out in the field every day, taking action and making a difference."
